Born 1981 in Inner Mongolia, China, based in Hangzhou

“Criticism, sarcasm, or other, I’d rather stay in the state of pondering ‘other’,” said CHENG Ran, who consciously avoids the sociology of the past. The state of “other” could be comprehended as travelling through time and space freely, just like the detective in CHENG’s novel who roves around the planet disregarding regionalism and identity politics. CHENG’s work reinforces the aesthetics of instant experiences in an ever-changing environment, responding to the contemplation of life itself, and forever being on the road. Narrative is expelled and instant experience is emphasized in the artist’s practice. Nevertheless, in his recent series “Before Falling Asleep”, CHENG employs the frame of children’s bedtime story, and seems to return to metanarrative.
