Established in 1989, ESLITE GALLERY is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Over a quarter of a century, ESLITE GALLERY has been an active member in the development of Asian art scene. Despite many hardships in the ups and downs, there were also countless heartening moments which kept us moving towards our goals.

We are pleased to present the exhibition "Bloom: ESLITE GALLERY's 25th Anniversary" from 27 September to 02 November. The exhibition not only marks the twenty-five years in which ESLITE GALLERY has been active in the Asian contemporary art community, but to honor the relationships we have fostered with artists along the way as well. The show will include works by twenty-five artists, among which the majority are ones having longstanding relationships or past collaborations with ESLITE GALLERY. These include CAI Guo-Qiang, Tommy CHEN, CHI Ming, HSIA Yan, JENG Jundian, Kuang-Yu TSUI, LAI Chih- Sheng, LIEN Chien Hsing, Michael LIN, LIU Xiaodong, LU Liang, SU Wong-shen, Su-Mei TSE, TSONG Pu, WANG Yuping, XU Bing, Tzu-Chi YEH, YUAN Jai, and ZHAN Wang. ESLITE GALLERY is also active in introducing young talented artists and has invited renowned curators CHIN Ya-Chun, GONG Jow-Jiun, Sean C.S. HU, and Chia Chi Jason WANG to recommend emerging stars. Thus, we are excited to show recent works from CHANG Huei-Ming, CHENG Po-Tsung, HUANG Po-Chih, LIN Kun-Ying, LUO Jr-shin, and Trevor YEUNG in this exhibition.

The exhibition is entitled "Bloom" not only as a statement, but also a self-expectation. ESLITE GALLERY has always been at the forefront of representing and promoting the most relevant artists from Greater China. We will keep advancing with times and make history of our age alongside with artists and supporters of great vision.

CAI Guo-Qiang

Cai Guo-Qiang was born in 1957 in Quanzhou City, Fujian Province, China. He was trained in stage design at the Shanghai Theater Academy, and his work has since crossed multiple mediums within art, including drawing, installation, video and performance art. While living in Japan from 1986 to 1995, he explored the properties of gunpowder in his drawings, an inquiry that eventually led to his experimentation with explosives on a massive scale and to the development of his signature explosion events. Drawing upon Eastern philosophy and contemporary social issues as a conceptual basis, these projects and events aim to establish an exchange between viewers and the larger universe around them, utilizing a site-specific approach to culture and history. He currently lives and works in New York.

Cai was awarded the Japan Cultural Design Prize in 1995 and the Golden Lion at the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999. In the following years, he has received the 7th Hiroshima Art Prize (2007), the 20th Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize (2009), and AICA’s first place for Best Project in a Public Space for Cai Guo-Qiang: Fallen Blossoms (2010). He also curated the first China Pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennale, 2005, and held the distinguished position as Director of Visual and Special Effects for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. In 2012, Cai was honored as one of five Laureates for the prestigious Praemium Imperiale, an award that recognizes lifetime achievement in the arts in categories not covered by the Nobel Prize.  Additionally, he was also among the five artists who received the first U.S. Department of State - Medal of Arts award for his outstanding commitment to international cultural exchange.

Among his many solo exhibitions and projects include Cai Guo-Qiang on the Roof: Transparent Monument, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2006 and his retrospective I Want to Believe, which opened at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York in February 2008 before traveling to the National Art Museum of China in Beijing in August 2008 and then to the Guggenheim Bilbao in March 2009. In 2011, Cai appeared in the solo exhibition Cai Guo-Qiang: Saraab at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, Qatar, his first ever in a Middle Eastern country. In 2012, the artist appeared in three solo exhibitions:Cai Guo-Qiang: Sky Ladder (The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles), Cai Guo-Qiang: Spring (Zhejiang Art Museum, Hangzhou, China), and A Clan of Boats (Faurschou Foundation, Copenhagen, Denmark).

His first-ever solo exhibition in Brazil, Cai Guo-Qiang: Da Vincis do Povo, went on a three-city tour around the country in 2013, traveling from Brasilia to São Paulo before reaching its final destination in Rio de Janeiro. In October 2013, Cai created One Night Stand (Aventure d’un Soir), an explosion event for Nuit Blanche, a citywide art and culture festival organized by the city of Paris.

His exhibition, Falling Back to Earth opened in November 2013 at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art in Australia. He currently lives and works in New York.

LU Liang

LU Liang's paintings have very strong narrative quality and at the same time implicate powerful emotions beneath their quiet appearances, which reflecting the complicate and agitating ambience of the contemporary world.

Human's state of survival in this fast pace society has always been the pivot of LU's work. In his work, references to classic materials of both the East and the West have been blended into fables about people's life nowadays. LU once said, "I wish to use the classics with a contemporary attitude rather than invariably worship or simply imitate them. For me, the continuation of classics is a mode of appreciating the world, a mode that might seem clumsy but is undoubtedly reliable." Through exquisite rendering of the light and setting, he created scenes which look realistic while emotionally indescribable to bring out his queries about the contemporary life in China and beyond. In many of LU's landscapes or interiors, the scenes are empty.  However, traces of human activities can be sensed clearly in these spaces that hint at some unspoken stories.

LU Liang was born in 1975 in Shanghai, China. He went to Beijing to pursue his artistic training in the Department of Murals in The Central Academy of Fine Arts, and graduated with B.A. and M.A. degrees in 1999 and 2005 respectively. LU is currently a lecturer at The Central Academy of Fine Arts.

Tzu-Chi YEH

Tzu-Chi YEH studied at Chinese Culture University in Taipei, Taiwan before furthering his education at Brooklyn College of City University of New York, USA. He moved back to Taiwan after living in New York for 19 years in order to settle in Hualien, a city facing the east coast of Taiwan, with his family. His paintings almost always present a visual diary of his past in which place and memory merge in poetic depictions of natural scenery he holds dear to his heart. YEH 's works present the true beauty of Taiwan's mountains and seas, one that has never been revealed before and that offers a deep breath of beauty from life and nature. Through YEH's works we can see his dedication to painting and his beliefs, and the deep love and gratitude he feels towards the land where he was born and raised. Like a monk who prays as he passes through the mountains or a traveler who chants as he gazes at the sea, YEH is focused on pursuing a dialogue with nature, an endless exploration of art's soul.

YEH’s landscape and still-life works share many characteristics with portrait paintings; they emphasize contrasts in lighting and atmosphere between background and foreground, which accents the development of space. He uses precise changes in tone and hue to express a unified sense of light, and employs a minimalist composition and subtle arrangement, creating a profound tranquility and deep nostalgia. “My paintings present a certain period of time that has materialized and condensed in space”. As such, objects portrayed by YEH become monuments, and the landscape sacred and solemn. Under YEH’s brush, the subjects quietly unfold a monologue of their own.

LIU Xiaodong

LIU Xiaodong was born in 1963 in Jincheng, a town in the Liaoning Province in China. He moved in 1978 to Beijing and later graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts.

As other artists of his generation turn away from more traditional forms of painting, LIU continues to capture the realism of life and his technique has matured into "slack expressionism" where a sense of immediacy and familiarity permeates throughout his paintings, further accentuated by his disinterested interpretation of the subject matter; this familiarity becomes the basis of a dialogue between artist and viewer.

The affection he has for people is the starting point of his work, which gradually spreads into the field of social implication. The life of man and their body, the texture of air and objects are the few vital points of LIU's work.

He is on the constant search of the subtle gap that separates painting and other artistic forms, and he has found his answer in the sentimental demand of painting as a craftsmanship. LIU values painting as a movement. He says "the process of painting brings surely a body language, and this is what makes painting irreplaceable. It is coagulation rather than instantaneity that is at the core of painting."

Rather than some specific brush technique, it is the social environment and situations that make up the "Realistic" core of Liu's works. This realism is moving away from the social realism of the past- a movement that despite its name relied on an artificial setting of themes. LIU refrains from placing his models within his own subjective nostalgia; instead he locates them firmly in the breathless and ever-changing transformation of Chinese society.

HSIA Yan

Hsia Yan was born into a wealthy family in Xiangxiang, Hunan Provence, but raised as an orphan in Nanjing after his parents passed away early in his life. When the war began, the young artist served in the military and drifted from cities to cities before settling in Taiwan in 1949. Here, he studied art with Lee Chun-shan and founded one of the most important artist group called Tongfang Art Group with fellow students including Hsiao Chin, Huo Gang, Chen Daoming, O-yang Wen-yuan, Hsiao Ming-hsian. In 1963 he went to Paris to study art and it was during the five years that he spent there when he developed “fuzzy man,” his signature style that symbolizes the absurdity and sense of isolation of modern existence as well as the artist’s sadness for a life of vagrancy. Soon after Paris, Hsia moved to New York and explored photorealism before returning to Taiwan again in 1992. Currently he lives in Shanghai, where he continues to explore different styles and forms of contemporary art with concepts that emanate an Eastern charm that is both robust and spiritual.

CHI Ming

Youth charms people with it vigor and unrestraint, and also with the unlimited possibilities and dreams that it promises. With excellent skill and dense emotions, CHI Ming captures the young generation of contemporary China to which himself belongs. He probes into the unique and unsettle souls of the generation growing up in a capitalistic China which their parents would not have imagined, showing their self-confidence, boldness and wild desires.

CHI has inherited the artistic talent from his grand-father and father, who earned their livings and reputations by painting the portrait of Mao Zedong and movie posters respectively. Being the third generation of a family of painters, CHI is clearly aware of the freedom to express himself through his paint brush was not something that his grand-father or father could had enjoyed. Likewise, he is deeply aware that his generation is exceptionally blessed. He depicts his subjects in private spaces where they are not shy away from pursuing pleasures as well as dreams, while the naivety and fragility of these unruly young people are also implicated. His figurative paintings are like snapshots of life in contemporary China blended with a surrealistic touch.

1984 born in Yantai, Shandong

JENG Jundian

JENG Jundian's elegant and simple fragments of color lines recall the flowing contours in portrait sketches as
well as the lines created by the cun method in Chinese ink painting. Essentially his paintings show a new
relationship between the complimentary colors, light and space of Impressionism. They also challenged Kandinsky's theory of "dot, line and surface." Though so repetitive and orderly that there seems to be a lack of
emotion at first glance, JENG's horizontal and perpendicular geometric lines in fact provide a new direction to painting. By infusing new life to his "color lines," JENG Jundian has established a unique painting style with
fragmented color linesthat overlap to compose bodies, landscapes and objects of sensitivity and sensibility.

ZHAN Wang

ZHAN Wang was born in 1962 in Beijing where he continues to work until today. His creation has always found their roots in the Chinese scholar tradition, myths, religion and the profane life, yet out of this soil grew out works that depicts the total transformation of Chinese society, economics and culture since the 1990’s. It is the narrative and mythical nature that makes his work so immediate and intimate in relation to the spectator.

ZHAN became known for his stainless-steel scholar’s rocks in the 1990’s. His artificial rock is the first Chinese contemporary sculpture to be collected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He has realized his intention of internationalized and contemporized this ancient unique Chinese culture of rock appreciation.

ZHAN has minted a new visual language that mythologizes China’s 21st-century metamorphosis into a modern, gleaming stainless-steel society while holding on to its traditions. While he is said to be a conceptualist sculptor, he believes that concept cannot be formed without artistry; this idea reflects the pursuit for moderation (Zhongyong) in Chinese philosophy.

The process of creation, from discovery of the rocks to their meticulous replication, reflects ancient philosopher Laozi’s notion that man cannot transcend nature. Working within nature’s confines is what distinguishes ZHAN’s work from western sculptors who seek to transform nature to express them.

ZHAN’s work combines Taoist notions of illusion, reality, and nature with an existentialist embrace of the absurd. Much of his work can only be seen in photographs or videos because part of his concept is that some of the sculptures be permanently exhibited in unreachable destinations. Even though he started off as a sculptor, he continues to expand the form and aesthetic significance in his work for the past twenty years.

SU Wong-shen

From Tamsui in New Taipei to Zuoying in Kaohsiung, the world of images of Taiwanese artist SU Wong-shen (b. 1956) is essentially centered on his home.  Beyond the trends of shock-value aesthetics and grand narratives, SU’s works illustrate that an understated humorous tone and quirky artistic expression evolved from regularity is a desirable approach for stirring local identity and establishing a set of local aesthetics.

His distinct bird’s-eye view technique gives an extraordinary visual imagery to his panoramic scenes or narratives. The settings of his work creates a trans-conceptual space, where the various visual variations experienced in flying or soaring impart movement within stillness, and where the center is in all places at all times and any single subject can be the subject of interest.

SU makes frequent use of iconographic symbols, such as animals and trees, while the center of his interest has always been playing with textures. These elements form a habitable and playable perceptual space balanced by a rational allegory and calm tones. Via the actions and composition of the animals, the artist brings the relationship between human beings and their environment to a metaphoric and poetic level.

His artistic accomplishments are ultimately not manifested in the application of trendy concepts or strategic manipulations, but are determined by the employment of alternative thinking and distinctly independent artistic language.

WANG Yuping

Born and raised in Beijing, Wang Yuping feels great affections for the south town he grew up in. In view of his passion for the common life of ordinary people, Feng Boyi refers his works to the plebeian version of the Japanese Ukiyo-e. WANG typically blends acrylic, oil pastel, oil paint on handcrafted paper, and according to Fan Di-an, this mixture allows the color patches to maintain their loose and random feature.

Lately WANG focuses on painting from life, with subjects ranging from the scenes of old Beijing to trivial objects such as books, jars, typewriter, and corks. WANG brings forward the intimate, calm, warm yet melancholy nature of ordinary objects. In his paintings there are no sharp lines, no accurate shape, no standard perspective. His subjects are reduced to clouds of saturated and pure color, and their fuzzy fringes make them seem as if they have been scrupulously caressed. According to YU Ding, it is the sincere wish to communicate with one’s surrounding environment that drives WANG to paint from life. It is also the artist’s personal choice to divert from trends in contemporary art that restlessly place focus on innovative media, languages, and styles. From 2004 to 2006 WANG returned to his alma mater Central Academy of Fine Arts of China to teach. As he painted along with his students, he found once again the pleasure of painting. He says: “In art today, there is too much talk of ideas and viewpoints, but my greatest pleasure is still painting in itself. When we are young and we pick up the brush for the first time and we start painting, it is because we love it. After all the years of training, study and reflection in art, however, painting is no longer as enjoyable as before. Over-emphasizing innovation has become a spiritual burden, and the pleasure we felt when we held the brush for that very first time has disappeared”. WANG’s works are the traces of his quest for genuineness in art.

LIEN Chien Hsing

LIEN Chien Hsing first began in the early 1980s as a surrealist concerned with ecological and environmental protection before evolving into a neo-expressionist in the late 1980s, focusing on critiques of modern day consumerism and vanity. Since 1989, LIEN has directed his attention to magical realism, reflecting his sentimentality regarding the lost of traditional values, humanity and nature. The artist continues his line of magical realism by setting his works against a background of ruins and imbues them with symbols, metaphors, elements in order to hint the motives and purpose behind their creation. His works show his concern for the degradation of the natural environment and reflect his ruminations about civilization and humanity.

XU Bing

An important figure among contemporary Chinese artists, XU Bing expresses precise criticism and thoughts in his works with unique subtlety and wit, through which the viewer can sense an extraordinary panache and personality. He is especially attuned to the role words and the substance of writing play in shaping values and culture of a society. Once he wrote, “To touch words is to touch the foundation of culture. To reconstruct words is to reconstruct the very part of human thought. This is a real ‘Cultural Revolution’.” From traditional Chinese woodcuts, contemporary installation of ready-made objects, square Chinese characters invented by the artist, to the organism medium, XU Bing combines various forms of art to convey his philosophical and artist thoughts. He had been awarded the MacArthur Award in 1999, Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize in 2003, Artes Mundi Prize in 2004 and Southern Graphics Council Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. He is now Vice President of Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, China.

TSONG Pu

TSONG Pu was born in Shanghai in 1947 and came to Taiwan in 1949. After graduating from Fu-Hsin Trade and Arts School in 1969, TSONG enrolled into La Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando de Madrio in 1973 and stayed in Spain for eight years in total. In 1981, he returned to Taiwan and helped found some spaces of contemporary art such as Studio of Contemporary Art (SOCA) and IT Park, and he also became one of the representatives of abstract art in Taiwan.

The basic unit of TSONG's painting is square stamp, by which he expresses the movement and self-autonomy of artistic ideas in the cubic or geometric hard-edge compositions. From grid dividing, stamping, to ordering, TSONG's stamp painting recalls the technique of pointillists, but he aims not at mimetic representation. Instead, he seeks, through his formal language, to express the dynamics that "one breeds thousands." The sequence and movement of the stamps and the varied density of colors reflect the artist's mindscape that is both self-regulating and freedom-loving. Recently, TSONG introduces daily ready-mades such as aluminum and paper into his stamp painting, so as to underscore the overlapping or confrontation of microscopic spaces. The ready-mades of varied textures and weights may slant on the canvas or give rise to other figures. They become the visual foci and perform changes amidst order and harmony. "Change is existence," said TSONG Pu. He has been regulating and simplifying his ideas and seeking differences in the same. He transforms everyday things into "rhetorical language and punctuations marks, making them poetic."

Tommy CHEN

Rising from the East, Diver of Abstract Art

Tommy CHEN was born in Jinan, Shangdong Province, China, in 1931. Amidst the turbulence of the era, CHEN came to Taiwan and built his family here, later classified as one of the Chinese diasporic painters after the Chinese Civil War. At 18, CHEN enrolled into the department of art at National Taipei Teachers College and became the classmate of HSIAO Chin and LI Yuan-Chia. Afterwards, he learned under LI Chun-Shan, who had recognized his bold use of colors then. CHEN was acknowledged by HSIAO Chin as the first Chinese painter of abstract art, even earlier than ZAO Wu-Ki. At the end of 1955, CHEN, together with friends including HSIA Yan, LI Yuan-Chia, HO-Kan, HSIO Chin, co-founded "Ton Fon Art Group," and the eight founders were dubbed "The Eight Highwaymen of the East."

Influenced by Cubism at earlier stages, CHEN adopted geometric and architectural compositions. Around 1955, he introduced the formal elements of oracle bone characters into his paintings, attempting to capture the fluxes of consciousness through his abstract strokes. He also experimented with the combined effects of paints and varying materials, so as to equip his paintings with the uneven texture of antiques. During the 1980s, he turned to acrylic and watercolor paints, and thus his paintings appeared brighter and warmer, his strokes more dynamic. Like a scientific researcher, CHEN has been eager to explore the variations of materials, formations, and colors. He shapes microscopic worlds through the piling of paints; the concrete matters and abstract momentum come to clash on the canvas, generating many atlas-like tableaus vibrating with musical rhythms. As he remarked, "Make a change, or left behind." His works reflect the destructive and constructive urges of an epochal artist, not just because he has loosened the yokes of formal languages, but also because he has widened the parameters of material expressions. Overall, his creation displays cosmic magnificence and oriental brilliance. Transcending the constraints of language, his works crystallize and transform the images of life into many a lyric scenes.

In 1959 and 1965, CHEN participated in "Sao Paulo Art Biennial" for twice. In 1962, he was awarded the silver medal in the 2nd International Art Saloon of Hong Kong. His first solo exhibition took place at ESLITE GALLERY in 2012.

Spirit of Ton Fon Art Group

The modernization of Taiwanese fine arts began in 1950s. The alternations of political regimes and the influences of foreign cultures stimulated the original art scene on the island. Taiwanese fine arts had long been influenced by Japanese culture; then the diasporic painters from China brought over traditional Chinese aesthetics, and the entry of American power also entailed the introduction of western avant-garde ideas. Different cultures converged here, provoking the artists to search for new languages that could reflect their individual mindsets and social fluctuations. Ton Fon Art Group was established when the politics were despotic while the cultures were diversified. It competed with Fifth Moon Art Group founded around the same time, and together they commenced many new inspiring chapters for the art history in Taiwan.

Ton Fon Art Group was founded by Tommy CHEN, HSIA Yan, LI Yuan-Chia, HO-Kan, HSIAO Chin, WU Hao, OUYANG Wen-yen, and HSIAO Ming-Hsien. Most of them came to Taiwan after the Chinese Civil War, and they chose artistic creation as their lifelong aspiration despite difficult lives. Dissatisfied with the colleges' stereotypical pedagogy valuing imitation and realism, they came to LI Chuan Shan's studio for alternative learning. LI, the father of modern art in Taiwan, set up his studio on Andong Street in Taipei in 1951. He influenced the students most from the aspects of knowledge and conception. Apart from introducing such new ideas of western fine arts as abstract expressionism and automatism to them, LI also encouraged them to forsake the tradition of imitating the classics and to create their own individualized styles. These youths, based on their shared longing for spontaneous expression, abandoned the learned skills of painting and strived to find their exclusive languages in the hundreds of works every day, developing their own idiosyncratic styles at last. At the time when public gathering was politically suppressed, the eight comrades still decided to establish Ton Fon Art Group at the end of 1955. Their first group exhibition in 1957 immediately met positive acclaims, and the eight founders were entitled, by the UDN reporter, HO Fan, "The Eight Highwaymen of the East." From then on, they became the pioneers of modern arts, exploring the unknown and enriching eastern art with western ideas. Among them, Tommy CHEN was known for his extravagant colors and strong experimentalism. He utilized the skills and materials of western art to transform the symbols and rhythms of eastern art. His paintings, containing the features of sculpture, also broadened the parameters of painting the genre.

After the fifteen annual exhibitions, Ton Fon Art Group dismissed itself in 1971, and CHEN also distanced himself from the art scene for some time. Recently, he has resumed his painting, and his creative momentum is in no way dampened. His artistic integrity consolidated earlier is not tainted by the ups and downs of time. As art critic J.J. Shih noted, Tommy CHEN is an artist of "early departure and late arrival," but the viewers can observe the abiding "essence" and "palatability" of his works. Today, people can hardly envision the prosperity of Ton Fon Art Group, but they can appreciate, from CHEN's works, an epochal artist's spiritual tenacity after the storms of times, as well as his delightful indulgence in creation.
