ESLITE GALLERY is pleased to present the second exhibition from its Cross-Strait Young Artists Exhibition Program. Curated by GONG Jow-Jiun, Director, Doctoral Program in Art Creation and Theory, Tainan National University of the Arts, Taiwan, “Are We Working Too Much?” features four artists and one theater company, specifically KAO Junhonn, CHOU Yu-Cheng, HSU Che-Yu, NI Xiang and Riverbed Theatre.

KAO Jun-honn’s ruins painting project began several years ago. Since then he has ventured into Haishan, Dale, Jinlong, Huxiao, Baihudie, Zongye, Feiyan and many more abandoned sites and painted their past glory onto the walls there. Both the sites themselves and the wall paintings by KAO can be seen as fragments of modernity, relating to relics of things now permanently forgotten, or permanently encroached upon and violated.

HSU Che-Yu always inserts fictional characters into his works. For the artist, re-creation is not the event in retrospect, but the dramatization of it. Message is accurate in form but unrecognizable to the eyes – an irrational state of the interface. Behind its functional facade lies its sensible interior – a spectacle.

CHOU YU-Cheng 's projects emphasize the working procedures behind his visual realizations. Concerned with the ways in which alternative styles of manipulation can be generated from ready-made objects, his work at the same time poses questions about established facts, and between the beginning and end points of the cooperative process, generates corresponding sets of alternate types of benefits.

NI Xiang’s slapstick work shows Taiwan’s social ecology and its “vigorous productivity.”

For an audience of one in each performance, Six Feet Under – Ten Feet Above brought by Riverbed Theatre takes you on an Alice in Wonderland like voyage into our collective unconscious. Staged in a small gallery setting, a “security guard” opens a painting and allows the audience to literally step into the artwork behind the artwork. And by crossing into this interior space, the audience steps out of everyday life and enters into a realm of surreal possibilities where dreams and reality seamlessly merge. To walk out of oneself, to fall into the unknown, to bury oneself six feet under, to be reborn ten feet above… This performance is a personal meditation on death and dying, life and living.
