In his latest exhibition “Painting,” Michael Lin will present his vivacious and highly visual paintings and spatial decorations, as well as a creative collective project involving a team of twelve undergraduate and graduate students. With painting experience not a prerequisite, these students come from different backgrounds of science and the humanities, including: Dance, Engineering, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Anthropology, Physics, Accounting, Medicine, Political Science. They collaboratively painted six large-scale paintings, exchange ideas and discuss issues such as public art in an attempt for the artist to understand the observations and thoughts of students from a variety of fields. This type of cooperation reflects the many concerns that face the artist as he is in the midst of the creative process. While LIN may be well-known as an artist that “plays” with space and his large-scale public works of art are always refreshing, when he is back within an indoor gallery space, he is constantly analyzing “What is painting?” and how to best bring the concepts of his large-scale installations, which forms a complimentary/cooperation relationship with the space they inhabit, into the category of painting as well as be relevant to the local audience. In recent years, he began to develop a new mode of creation that involves the local community in collaborations for indoor exhibitions. “Model Home” exhibition held at the Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai this past spring is a recent example. He invited an architect, local Shanghai workers, young music creators, etc. to participate as co-creators. In these inter-discipline exchanges, not only the participants become part of the material, the artist also altered the viewing process and experience of the audience, who are able to recognize the attempt and brushworks of the painter. This solo exhibition at ESLITE GALLERY will reveal insights, reflections and inspirations of the artist in recent years.

Born in 1964, Michael LIN is internationally known for his painted walls and floors with reproduced and amplified traditional floral motifs inspired by traditional textiles from various cultures. His practice is characterized by embellishment and visual exuberance, and his site-specific works seek to create transformations within the space in which he works. As art critic Pauline J. Yao says, his works “efficiently demonstrate a major precept of contemporary art in our time: art is not simply something to be looked at, it is to be experienced in real time, often through tangible means. They articulate a feeling of liminality, of being suspended between the spaces, places and moments of our daily lives.” LIN’s works have been shown at the Fukuoka Triennial, Istanbul Biennial, Venice Biennale, and the Taipei Biennial, among others. Museum exhibitions include Palais de Tokyo in Paris, France; Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, Finland, etc. He is publically collected by Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul, Korea; Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo and 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan; Ullens Center of Contemporary Art in Beijing, China; Centro Per l’Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Prato, Italy’ Kunstlinie in Almere, The Netherlands, etc. Currently he lives and works in Taipei, Shanghai and Brussels.

Michael LIN

Michael LIN is internationally known for his painted walls and floors with amplified traditional floral motifs inspired by traditional textiles from various cultures. His practice is characterized by embellishment and visual exuberance, and his site-specific works seek to create transformations within the space in which he works. Viewer interaction is an important component in his works, which “efficiently demonstrate a major precept of contemporary art in our time: art is not simply something to be looked at, it is to be experienced in real time, often through tangible means,” as described by Pauline Yao, curator of Hong Kong’s M+ Museum. To Lin, “Exhibition” is the “medium” of his work. While rationally exploring the exhibition as a cultural event, his works also reveal a rich poetic quality. His large-scale installations explore painting, design, ornamentation, and culture through an interaction with architecture. The appropriation of everyday objects and patterns all derive from his personal environment and allow him to go beyond the beautiful and the sublime. His installations are environments or aesthetic slices of life that invite the viewer to share the space of art and architecture in socially contemplative ways.
