Opening Hours

A founding member of “Eastern Art Society,” HSIA Yan (1932-) was a leading promoter of modernism in Taiwan in the 1960s. Works shown in this exhibition are his recent metal sculptures of chaotic fine and bold lines based on “fuzzy man,” a painting series he has developed since 1963. As art critic André Lee observes, these sculptures show the dynamic movement of Western futurism but their seemingly nonchalant cuts and curves also work to soften the hardness of metal and reveal a transcending grace of the East. The artist will be present at the press conference at 14:30-16:30, Friday, April 30.

HSIUNG Ping-ming (1922-2002) was known for his persistent exploration in the zone between philosophy and fine arts. He strived to create work that captures time and space with its substance and display the raison d’etre with its hardness, while disclosing rhapsody for holding the eternity. He especially enjoyed the simplicity of geometrical patters in metal, and was partial to the splendor of bronze. This exhibition presents his bronze works, including the most well-known “buffalo” series.

Educated in Japan, CHEN Hsia-yu (1917-2000) became an important sculptor in Taiwan after being selected into the Japanese Imperial Salon three consecutive years since 1938, and subsequently received the honor of “permanent exemption from review” from the Salon. His works meld elements from Egyptian, Greek and Chinese Buddhist art, and exude the spirit of modern European and Japanese art. This exhibition highlights his sculptures that portray the classic beauty of Taiwanese women in the early 1900s.

HSIA Yan

Hsia Yan was born into a wealthy family in Xiangxiang, Hunan Provence, but raised as an orphan in Nanjing after his parents passed away early in his life. When the war began, the young artist served in the military and drifted from cities to cities before settling in Taiwan in 1949. Here, he studied art with Lee Chun-shan and founded one of the most important artist group called Tongfang Art Group with fellow students including Hsiao Chin, Huo Gang, Chen Daoming, O-yang Wen-yuan, Hsiao Ming-hsian. In 1963 he went to Paris to study art and it was during the five years that he spent there when he developed “fuzzy man,” his signature style that symbolizes the absurdity and sense of isolation of modern existence as well as the artist’s sadness for a life of vagrancy. Soon after Paris, Hsia moved to New York and explored photorealism before returning to Taiwan again in 1992. Currently he lives in Shanghai, where he continues to explore different styles and forms of contemporary art with concepts that emanate an Eastern charm that is both robust and spiritual.
