While “LIU Xiaodong in South Africa” just opened at ESLITE GALLERY in this May, the artist is going to have another show at Faurschou Foundation Copenhagen, “LIU Xiaodong: Painting as Shooting” on 26 May, exhibiting his important serial works in this decade. LIU Xiaodong has been to many places around the world for life-drawing projects. His subjects include a family of Chinese descendants in Cuba, the soldiers and people at the borders of Israel and Pakistan, bars and immigrants in London. “Migration” is also an issue of his constant interest. From his Warm Bed series concerning immigrants in China and prostitutes in Thailand to recent works about refugees to Europe, LIU has been addressing the influence of global issues about society, culture, economy, and ecology on the marginalized people.

As the original title “Painting as Shooting” suggests, LIU Xiaodong regards painting as social action. Unlike most painters working in their studioes, he directly faces his objectives, capturing people’s varying postures in daily lives with his sharp vision and adroit skills. This exhibition also presents his diaries and sketches produced during his painting, as well as ten documentaries. Viewers can follow the painter’s vision to see the lives of different cities and landscapes and, furthermore, to contemplate the common problems of different countries about human existence, migration, war and construction.

Curator Jérôme Sans was the former director of Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing and one of the founders of Palais de Tokyo in France. His plan for “Painting as Shooting” comprises three chapters. The first one was open at Giorgio Cini Foundation in 2015. It was a collateral show of the 56th Venice Biennial as well as LIU’s first significant solo in Europe. The second chapter “Diary of an Empty City” was shown at Faurschou Foundation Beijing in the same year. The third chapter, upcoming in Copenhagen, will open at 4pm on 26 May and exhibit until 16 December.
